Hort Innovation has released its Annual Fund Report for the nursery industry. The annual report maps out where key levy funds have been invested in 2020/21 and provides a rundown of new, ongoing, and completed research and development and marketing projects.
During the 2020/21 period, Australia’s nursery industry faced several challenges brought about by droughts, floods, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and several biosecurity threats such as the recently detected Polyphagous shot-hole borer and American serpentine leafminer.
Despite the significant pressures, the industry continued to thrive, investing $2.8 million into R&D and $727,404 into marketing.
The report outlines how the funds were split into each of the Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) focus areas of demand, knowledge, protection, productivity and careers. Protection, which covers biosecurity and plant protection commanded the largest allocation of levy funds.
The report also includes top level data on the levy including:
- $3.19 million in levies (2020/21) was collected by the Government and passed on to Hort Innovation.
- The nursery industry continues to be Australia’s largest horticultural industry by value, with a production value of $2.56 billion, up 4.8 percent since 2019/20.
- There has been a significant increase in production units, growing from 1.9 billion in 2017/18 to 2.1 billion in 2018/19.
