Save the date – production nursery webinars returning in 2018

Registrations have opened for two free webinars to equip production nursery managers with the latest insights on sustainable pesticide usage and effective phytotoxicity management.

Hosted by Dr Andrew Manners from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), the following webinars are part of the nursery levy funded project Building the resilience and on-farm biosecurity capacity of the Australian production nursery industry (NY15002), a collaborative project between Nursery and Garden Industry Australia (NGIA), Horticulture Innovation and DAF.

Pesticide selection for resistance management

Thursday 29 March, 10am-11am AEST

Pesticides (fungicides, insecticides, miticides and herbicides) are useful tools in the management of nursery stock. However, concerns surrounding pesticide resistance are increasing, highlighting the need for the strategic use of chemicals.

This webinar will discuss how pesticide resistance occurs, as well as the basic physiology related to pesticide resistance. Pesticide resistance management helps minimise the risk of resistance developing and will be discussed with practical recommendations made from a production nursery perspective.

The webinar will also cover how to choose pesticides within this framework and assist growers in putting together a pesticide plan for pest groups.

Phytotoxicity. How is it caused and how can it be managed?

Thursday 26 April, 10am-11am AEST

Production nurseries provide optimal growing conditions to produce healthy plants in an efficient manner. Despite this effort, some plants are very susceptible to specific conditions that can cause unusual growth patterns, including low or high pH, nutritional disorders, environmental conditions or sensitivities to particular pesticides (insecticides, fungicides or herbicides).

This webinar will discuss how to identify patterns that indicate plants may be effected by phytotoxicity and provide relevant management options. Examples of how to test for various types of symptoms that are suspected to be caused by a phytotoxicity will be included.

Other resources

The two webinars complement the six webinars that have already been held through the project. The past webinars are available on the NGIA YouTube channel, and focus on the following topics:

  • Leaf spots and fungicides
  • Comparing fungal and bacterial leaf spots
  • Insects and pesticides
  • Identifying pests, beneficial insects and mites
  • Mite identification and management
  • Virus identification and management.

The webinars are just one output of the project. Pest and disease workshops are currently being scheduled for each state and territory, with details to be released shortly.

There is also a growing library of technical pest and disease information on the NGIA website, including pest factsheets, pest management plans and some nursery papers.
