The Green Industry Growing Leaders program kicked off in Sydney last week, with a two-day introductory leadership forum.
Led by management consultancy firm, The Right Mind, the program is funded by Hort Innovation using nursery and turf industry levies, and funds from the Australian Government.
This four-month professional development course, is designed to empower motivated representatives from the nursery workforce and support industry growth, by equipping participants with the tools to progress their career and business via explaining and the development of leadership skills.
For the 2019 program, 20 scholarships were awarded to turf or nursery industry levy payers, or workers at these businesses – 15 stemming from the nursery industry.
Cox Inall staff were fortunate enough to network with this year’s participants at a luncheon on the second day, and listen to a “fireside chat” with Ken Bevan from Alpine Nurseries, and Rob Niccol from Australian Native Landscapes, who provided insights on how growing yourself, can help grow your business.
Each shared advice on good management skills for developing oneself, empowering a team and supporting the future growth of a business and the broader industry. This gave participants some practical take home messages as they enter the next phase of the course.
Over the next four months, participants will undertake their own ‘workplace project’, where they will be able to utilise their learnings and apply it to their workplace.
The Green Leaders Program will conclude with a final leadership forum in Brisbane on 1 August 2019, where participants will make a short presentation on their chosen project, including outcomes and insights – a terrific resource for participants as they graduate from the program.
The Australian nursery industry is booming, recently valued at approximately $2.4 billion. It’s vital that the industry places a large focus on programs such as this, that foster the development of the workforce and future industry growth.
